“Today most Whites see White racism as a part of the American past, and anti-racist struggle as largely completed. Yet people of color – African Americans, Native Americans, Americans of Latin American or Asian or Middle Eastern ancestry – consistently report that they experience racism (Alter 2004; Bobo 2001; Feagin and Sykes 1994). These reports are not the product of oversensitivity or paranoia. Instead, they may even understate the impact that White racism has on the everyday lives of people of color (Bonilla-Silva 2003; Feagin and Vera 1995).

While American workplaces and public institutions are increasingly integrated, very few Whites have social friends among people of color (Bonilla-Silva 2003:107–111). White isolation makes it easy for them to dismiss the complaints of people of color as “whining” and “playing the race card.”

Whites do not themselves experience harassment for “driving while Black,” or the stony inattention encountered when “ordering a restaurant meal while Indian.” Their conversations with family and friends are never interrupted by perfect strangers telling them to “Speak English! This is America!” Nobody has ever tried to seduce them by confessing that they’ve “ always wanted to make it with a hot Asian chick.” And they don’t have the kinds of conversations with people of color where they would hear about such incidents, which are so frequent as to be stereotypical. Everyday moments of discrimination are only part of the picture, though.”

How many drinks am I, an adult woman, allowed to have after work on Friday night before being dismissed as a “party girl” or “asking for it”? How high can my heels be, and how short a skirt can I wear, before being implicated in any crime against me? And, just so that I’m clear, how many metres can I walk to get myself home?

And if something happened to me, how harshly would I be judged? If I vanished on that walk to my front door, what would you have to say about me? Would I be tut-tutted at for not accepting the offer of an escort home? Would idiots take to Facebook to admonish me for supposedly leading some guy on?

Would do-gooders and commentators and Twitterati-types take my parents to task for not raising me to act sensibly? Would they lambast my friends and lovers for not taking adequate care of me? Would everyone in my life suffer because I exceeded my allocated metres of solo walking?

Would every media outlet in the country view my disappearance as an opportunity to point out that, as it happens, women have more to fear in our world than men?

Would you, quietly, at the back of your mind, think that if I’d just stayed home with my partner, like a good wife and woman, none of this would have happened to me?

Are you just looking for one big, smug fucking excuse to say that you told me so?

Two sororities, Zeta Tau Alpha and Delta Delta Delta, at UT Austin thought it was perfectly normal to host “Fiesta”-themed parties. As you can imagine, it was smorgasbord for Mexican cultural appropriation, offensive stereotypes of Mexican cultural, and vicious demoralizing of undocumented immigrants. Students of color, particularly Mexican American and Latino groups were offended, but the sororities didn’t understand. Many are claiming it was “a joke” and that it was supposed to “celebrate Mexican culture”. Sorry, that’s fucking bullshit. You don’t celebrate Mexican culture by defaming it and why did the topic of immigration have to come up in a “celebration” of Mexican culture? Also, the picture above is highly degrading of undocumented immigrants by calling them “illegals” and making light of the serious economic, social, and political threats they face daily. Another instance of when cultural appropriation and unrecognized White privilege leads to racist behavior.

Wearing the mask may include straightening one’s hair so that unenlightened white folks, particularly prospective employers or other authority figures, will feel more comfortable. When I wear my hair in braids I find I am often perceived to be a threat, or undesirable, when encountering the unenlightened white public. That same public regards me more positively when my hair appears straightened. Lots of white folks have learned to associate black folks and natural hair with race pride. The logic of white supremacy equates loving blackness with being antiwhite. As a consequence, black folks who choose to love themselves may appear to most white folks as threats.

Workers arrested at South Africa’s Marikana mine have been charged in court with the murder of 34 of their colleagues shot by police.

The 270 workers would be tried under the “common purpose” doctrine because they were in the crowd which confronted police on 16 August, an official said.

Police opened fire, killing 34 miners and sparking a national outcry.

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesman Frank Lesenyego told the BBC the 270 workers would all face murder charges - including those who were unarmed or were at the back of the crowd.

“This is under common law, where people are charged with common purpose in a situation where there are suspects with guns or any weapons and they confront or attack the police and a shooting takes place and there are fatalities,” he said.

South African lawyer Jay Surju told the BBC’s Focus on Africa programme that the “common purpose” doctrine was used by the former white minority regime against activists fighting for racial equality in South Africa.

“This is a very outdated and infamous doctrine,” he said.

“It was discredited during the time of apartheid.”

The decision has also been condemned as “a flagrant abuse of of the criminal justice system” by constitutional lawyer Pierre de Vos.

The best known case was that of the “Upington 14”, who were sentenced to death in 1989 for the murder of a policeman in 1985.

The trial judge convicted the 14 activists, even though he acknowledged that they did not carry out the killing.

Anti-apartheid activists around the world protested against the ruling, which was overturned on appeal.

This man, James Verone, robbed a bank for one dollar. Why only one dollar? Because he knew that in prison he could get the medical care he could not afford with his part time salary as a convenience store clerk. He was approved for food stamps, but they did little to help his finances. Between his back problems, carpel tunnel, and arthritis, he simply couldn’t handle the pain any longer.

On June 9th, he sent a letter to his local paper, the Gaston Gazette, that stated: “When you receive this a bank robbery will have been committed by me. this robbery is being committed by me for one dollar. I am of sound mind but not so much sound body.”

He then took a cab to the RBC Bank, and handed the teller a note asking for one dollar and medical attention. He quietly took a seat in the lobby and waited for police to arrive.

Since Verone only stole one dollar, he was only charged with larceny. His bail, which he doesn’t plan to pay is set at $2,000, reduced from the normal $100,000. He’s scheduled to see a doctor this Friday, and hopes to get foot surgery, back surgery and to have a protrusion on his check treated.

To me, this is the perfect example of how disturbingly corrupt and unjust our health care system has become under HMO’s. For this man, or any person for that matter, feels that he needs to be imprisoned just to see a doctor, is ridiculous.

This is exactly what I hate about America. Why is it that you can buy an entire house with money you don’t have, but still can’t apply for health care if you don’t meet the requirements? That’s messed up.
